Virgil Abloh Sneakers Auctions For $25 Million

An auction of 200 pairs of the Louis Vuitton and Nike Air Force 1 sneakers created by late American designer Virgil Abloh have fetched a total of $25m.

Ablorh, prior to his death, designed the Louis Vuitton and Nike “Air Force 1” sneakers, for the 2022 Spring-Summer.
He was also said to have been involved in the early organization of the auction prior to his demise.

The shoes, according to reports, ranged from size 5 to 18 and secured the highest price at $352,800 each. This is said to be more than 23 times its $15,000 original price. Other pairs of sneakers designed by the late Ablorh also commanded a higher price and this includes a $1.47million pair of Nike Air Ships worn by basketball star Michael Jordan.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit a scholarship fund set up by Virgil Abloh that supports aspiring designers of Black, African-American, or African descent.

According to a popular American auction and brokerage company, Sotheby, it has received 10,000 bids totaling 40% of which came from Asia. More than two-thirds of such bidder’s, according to the company, were aged under 40.

Abloh, a multi-talented DJ, architect and designer died in November at the age of 41 following a private battle with cancer. A close associate of Kanye West, Abloh was the first Black American to be named creative director of a top French fashion house and brought streetwear and a less elitist approach to the world of luxury.

The brown, white and cream-colored sneakers boast Nike’s famous swoosh logo Louis Vuitton’s recognizable monogram and damier motifs. They were created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Nike Air Force 1, which was designed in 1982.
