Dame Esther Louise Rantzen DBE (born 22 June 1940) is an English journalist, television presenter and producer, and founder of the UK charity Childline.

Rantzen began her career in the 1960s as a researcher and later producer for the BBC current affairs program That’s Life! She presented the show from 1973 to 1994. Rantzen has also presented several other BBC shows including the children’s show It’s a Knockout, and the consumer affairs program That’s Esther.

In 1986, Rantzen founded the charity Childline, a helpline for children in the United Kingdom. The helpline provides counseling and support for children who are suffering from abuse, neglect, or other forms of harm. Childline is now part of the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children).

Rantzen has received several awards for her work in television and her charity work, including a BAFTA for her work on That’s Life! in 1977 and the OBE in 1986. She was made a Dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2011.

In addition to her work in television and charity, Rantzen has also written several books, including an autobiography and several books about Childline. Esther Rantzen was diagnosed with lung cancer on January 29, 2023.
